Stripping C2PA metadata: what it does, and does not
You can drop this metadata from a file, and saying so is honest. What you get is the real question.
Stripping C2PA metadata removes the provenance record from a file. The pixels and text content stay untouched. Screenshots and format conversion drop the metadata without anyone asking. Providers say it can be removed accidentally or intentionally. When the record is gone, verifiers report that no content credentials were found. They do not report tampering. The absence of credentials proves nothing about authorship. Anthropic says a missing mark does not mean content was human-made, and detectors do not read C2PA at all. Stripping is a metadata operation. It is not proof of authorship, in either direction.
Why this page exists
Tool sites hold this SERP with one-click strippers and false claims about what they achieve. Searchers deserve what the vendors actually document: the mechanism and its limits. That's the informational answer to a tool-only search, one we won't serve.
The tells that show up here
Not every AI tell appears everywhere. These are the ones that cluster on this surface, and what it is about the format that produces them.
- not-only-but
- The page must draw precise distinctions without the parallel-structure tic.
- chatbot-artifact
- Tool-site copy opens with 'great question' and closes with 'happy to help'.
- vague-attribution
- 'Some say stripping is illegal' is unattributed fear-mongering to avoid.
Before and after
A generic AI draft on the left. On the right, the real output of running that draft through underslop, checked so it adds no name or number the draft did not already carry. The voice is The Steady Hand.
Our AI Metadata Remover strips C2PA content credentials from any image in seconds! 100% effective, 100% invisible! Just upload and download — your image is completely clean, invisible to any tool on the market! Don't let AI signatures hold your content back in today's fast-paced world!
Credentials can be removed, and the process is documented. There are two limits. Verifiers report that no credentials are present, and detectors do not read credentials in the first place.
How to do it by hand
- Understand what is on the file The C2PA block is present in most image and video formats, and the common metadata tools can remove it there. PDFs are read-only in those tools. Check what a verifier reports before assuming what the file carries.
- Decide what you need the file for If the publisher or platform needs the provenance record, keep it in the file. If you only need what the file shows, the metadata has no part in that.
- Use the normal save and export flows Keep a copy of a manifest before any re-save, re-encode, or format conversion. Those steps are where manifests get dropped. Platforms also strip metadata during re-encoding, but not every time.
- Remember what absence proves A file without credentials says nothing about who made it. Anthropic notes that a missing mark does not prove content was human-written. Detectors do not read metadata at all.
Questions
Does taking a screenshot remove content credentials?
Yes. Screenshots never carry C2PA, and re-encoding or re-exporting drops the manifest. Platforms strip it during re-encoding too, but not every time.
What does stripping metadata do?
It takes the provenance record out of the file. The pixels and text stay exactly as they are. Verifiers then report no content credentials found, never tampered.
Is removing metadata legal?
No California law currently in force bans it. The California bill that would have restricted provenance-removal tools failed in August 2024. Whether these credentials qualify as copyright management information under federal law remains open, with no court decision yet.
Does a file without credentials mean it was human-made?
No. Anthropic says a missing mark doesn't prove the content wasn't AI-generated. OpenAI says its content can sit behind a file whose metadata was stripped during sharing.
Can a stripped manifest come back?
Some platforms keep durable credentials. An invisible watermark or fingerprint can trace a stripped manifest back through an online database.
Claude marks are real and the coverage is still settling. underslop is the edit, not a remover: it edits an AI draft so it reads like you wrote it, and it makes no promise about what any detector will report. Your text is held for 0 seconds.
