What reaching for it signals
Boasts, stands as, and serves as all do the same job: they hand an inanimate noun a human posture so a claim can sound confirmed without anyone actually confirming it. 'The hotel boasts a rooftop pool' borrows the voice of a proud owner without producing one. That register comes from brochure and listing copy, writing whose entire job is making a building or a place sound impressive. General-purpose chat models default to a different voice when answering a question or drafting an email, second-person address and hedged claims, not brochure prose. The travel-brochure register only surfaces when a prompt specifically asks for it, which is rare, so the word rarely turns up in ordinary drafts.
Whether underslop counts it
underslop's linter doesn't score 'boasts' and doesn't report it as contested either; it isn't on either list. We searched our own twelve-model corpus for it directly (research/reports/ai-tells-empirical.json, entry emp-009, checked against the 100 conversations in research/logs/conversations) and found zero occurrences across all of them. Scoring a word current models don't produce would flag the wrong writers, mainly travel copywriters and real-estate listings, the people the word still legitimately belongs to. A blocklist built for 2023 output punishes a habit the models themselves already dropped.
