The arms race these tools sit in

The category exists because detectors guess and marks travel. Providers ship statistical marks and classifiers, and the rewrite tools ship edits aimed at both. The Claude watermark explainer covers that loop in detail, with sources.

The part the category marketing leaves out: a rewrite can trade a statistical flag for worse writing. If the goal is text a person actually wants to read, a score against a classifier is the wrong target.

Why provenance and audit change the question

Every run logs what changed and why. For a team that has to show its work, or a writer who was flagged and wants a defensible record, that log is the difference between a claim and evidence.
