QuillBot alternatives for AI-slop rewriting

QuillBot is the rewriter most students reach for first. This page states what it does well, what it does not do, and where an alternative built for AI-slop rewriting starts from a different place.

What QuillBot is

QuillBot is a paraphrasing and grammar tool. It rewrites a sentence in three styles on the free tier and seven modes on premium, summarizes text, and checks grammar and citations.

Pricing as of 11 August 2026: a free tier with a 2,000-word paraphraser limit and a 125-word summarizer; Premium at $19.95 a month, $39.95 a quarter, or $99.95 a year. QuillBot's own pricing page notes changes effective 21 August 2026.

QuillBot also runs a free AI-humanizer page. We have not tested its output, so this page does not rate it.

Where QuillBot excels

The paraphraser is fast and genuinely useful. Seven modes cover tones a writer actually uses, and the free tier handles a student working sentence by sentence.

The browser extension puts the tool in the page you are editing, which is where the writing happens.

For a paragraph that is simply clumsy, QuillBot is the right tool. The limit is that it never asks what the text started as.

What QuillBot does not do

It does not detect AI tells. Run a machine-written paragraph through the paraphraser and the result is a machine-written paragraph in different words; the patterns that make it read as machine were never the target.

It has no fact-guard. A false claim survives the rewrite in new clothes, because the tool never checks claims.

It keeps no audit trail. There is no record of what changed, which matters for anyone who has to show their work.

It sells a subscription, not words. The $99.95 annual plan covers a calendar year whether you write five words that month or fifty thousand.

The verdict

If the job is to rephrase a sentence, QuillBot does it well and cheaply, and the free tier may be all you need.

If the job is to take an AI draft and make it read like a person wrote it, the sentence is the wrong unit. underslop starts from the tells: it finds the machine patterns, rewrites with your voice, guards the facts, and logs the edit.

At $0.10 per 1,000 words, the per-word price makes more sense than a subscription for anyone who writes in bursts.
